TILTshift Dance closes its second Asian American Dance Festival on Saturday, September 12, 2026 with the Mainstage Showcase at the Saville Theatre on San Diego City College's East Village campus (14th Street and C Street). Doors are at 7 p.m. for a curated evening of live dance tied to the 2026 theme, Becoming Asian American.

Founder Joyce Lien Kushner built AADF as a citywide home for early- and mid-career AAPI dance makers, a lane San Diego rarely offered at festival scale. Last year's inaugural run served 191 artists across 34 works and drew more than 500 audience members with help from 30-plus volunteers. The 2026 festival stretches August 30 through September 12 across MCASD La Jolla, Liberty Station, City Heights, and City College, with partial funding from City of San Diego Cultural Affairs and fiscal sponsorship through San Diego Dance Theater.

Mainstage is the paid capstone after the film screening, Collaborative Residency showcase, and the Community Day that organizers marked on hold. Four invited choreographers share personal work on heritage, immigration, and living multiculturally. The lineup includes AADF co-director grace shinhae jun (bkSOUL, also a City College dance faculty member), Kimie Parker of Sidra Bell Dance New York, San Diego collaborators aisha reddick and Odessa Mae Uno, and Filipina-American choreographer Adie San Diego, an AADF 2025 artist-in-residence.

Sliding-scale tickets run $20 to $45 on Ticket Tailor. A festival pass ($70 general, $100 support-the-artist tier) saves $15 if you are catching earlier paid nights. City College lists free parking in Lot 8 west of the Saville during festival events. East Village is a short walk from the blue-line America Plaza and City College stations if you want to skip garage hunting.

Who this is for: dance readers who want a seated concert with choreographic intent, not a street fair loop. You do not need concert-dance fluency; the festival frames each artist with enough program context that a curious friend can follow the through-line.

The August 30 opener at MCASD La Jolla paired dance films with gallery access, and the September 4 residency showcase at Liberty Station's Light Box Theater gave emerging choreographers a mid-festival stage. Community Day in City Heights was marked on hold on the official site as of late August, so Mainstage may be your only chance to catch live community dance in the 2026 run if that day stays paused.

Our take: this is San Diego's sharpest AAPI dance ticket of the fall. Worth it if you missed the MCASD film opening or the Liberty Station residency showcase. Pair a Saturday afternoon at the free House of Pakistan lawn program if you want cottage culture before the theater lights drop.
