TEMPEST’s Hanbin is rising by putting Vietnam on the solo frame

The first concept still for TEMPEST’s Hanbin as a soloist does not hide the passport. He crouches in a modern black áo dài against a phở-stall backdrop, blonde spikes up, jeans crystal-studded, with HEU’NG HANBIN stamped under the frame.

That is the rising move: a Vietnamese-born main dancer spending his first solo canvas on Vietnam, not a teaser that could belong to any mid-tier vocal unit.

Our read: Aug. 24’s digital single No Fear only works if the song matches the styling nerve. The concept already told you which country he is willing to center.

From Hưng Bin to YH’s first TEMPEST solo

Born Ngô Ngọc Hưng on Jan. 19, 1998, in Yên Bái, he came up as Hưng Bin in Hanoi dance crew C.A.C., then rode Mnet’s I-LAND in 2020 into Belift Lab before leaving on June 2, 2021. Same day, he moved to Yuehua Entertainment, now billed as YH.

TEMPEST debuted March 2, 2022, with It’s Me, It’s We. He has been called the first Vietnamese male K-pop idol ever since. Female Vietnamese idols arrived earlier; the male first is the clean claim.

Four years of group work later, YH confirmed he is the first TEMPEST member to solo. The slogan dropped Aug. 1: “No Fear, No Limits, Just HANBIN.” Release is Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. KST across digital platforms.

HEU’NG is the soft-power receipt

The Aug. 11 concept stills put identity up front. HEU’NG HANBIN blends Korean heung (흥), that charged sense of lift and spirit, with his given name Hưng. Another frame plays search-screen theater: hunt “HANBIN with FEAR,” land on the gag that there is no Hanbin with fear.

The styling does the harder work. Modernized áo dài on a Vietnamese street-food set is more than a wink for fans who already know his birthplace. It is the label agreeing the solo brand starts at home.

YH says he worked deep into the songmaking and plans a wider vocal range than the group stages have shown, including rougher tones. The track is still under wraps until the 24th, so that stays a promise.

Hanoi already knew the host

This spring he was back on home turf for the 2026 LCK Team Roadshow KIWOOM DRX Homefront at Hanoi’s Vietnam Exposition Center. TEMPEST played the Legend of Dragons stage; Hanbin hosted in Vietnamese and sat as a special judge on a local music-project final.

Same pattern as the solo teaser: useful in Korea, fluent at home, then a debut single that keeps nationality on the poster.

Our take

Hanbin is rising because TEMPEST’s first soloist slot is an identity statement, not a leftover B-side. Áo dài plus HEU’NG is a clearer thesis than the English title alone.

The open question is musical. Digital singles live or die on one listen, and the tracklist and MV teaser are still rolling out before the 24th. The watch is simple: does No Fear sound like the guy who put Vietnam in the concept frame, or like a generic courage anthem with a better bio?

Mark Aug. 24, 6 p.m. KST. The rising name already told you where he is from. Now he has to sound like it.
