Showa Alley is Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, 1964 West 162nd Street. GVJCI and The Shokudo Series present it. Adult general admission is $40 through the door date. Early-bird $30 ended September 25. Kids 3 to 17 are $15. Under 3 is free. Cards only.

The ticket covers entry, the posted entertainment, one serving of a featured Showa-era dish, and a small gift from The Shokudo. Extra food, drinks, and merch cost more. Parking is the onsite lot and the street.

The breezeway is dressed as a yokocho, the alley of izakayas and counters that people mean when they talk about postwar Japanese night streets. Showa is the 1926–1989 era. The last Alley was 2024. The page says this year is bigger. Takumi Alley, a merch lane curated by Shokudo host and chef Jon Kenzo Okeya, is new. Crafts, games, and a raffle run through the day. Proceeds go to GVJCI, The Shokudo, and Grateful Crane Ensemble, the Japanese American theater company. Yo Media is The Shokudo’s fiscal sponsor.

A stage card is locked on the org’s entertainment schedule. Yuujou Daiko at 2:30 p.m. Okinawan Ryukyuan Folk Music Group at 3:30. Kuniharu Yoshida calligraphy at 4:30. 33strings at 5:30. Michael Murata and Friends, the J-pop band, at 7:00. Derek Mio and Takaaki Hirakawa emcee. DJ JayKayEl is listed with the emcees on the flyer. Head chef Gary Matsumoto is named on the food side. Treat those times as the posted card. Confirm on the GVJCI page the week of if a rain or swap note appears.

The same Saturday, JANM’s Kokoro Craft Show is 10:00 to 4:00 at Nishi Betsuin in Little Tokyo, free. ESGVJCC Akimatsuri is 12:00 to 6:00 on Puente Avenue in West Covina, also free at the door. Showa Alley starts at 2:00 and runs later. You can do Kokoro in the morning and Gardena at night if you skip the San Gabriel Valley. You cannot do all three well.

GVJCI sits on the Gardena–Torrance line. The institute’s own history runs from a 1912 language school through a postwar hostel and a 1968 rename. This is a community-center fundraiser, not a fairgrounds Japan day. Come for the 2:30 taiko if you want the earliest vibe, or hold for the 7:00 J-pop set if dinner is the point. OC Japan Fair is the following weekend in Costa Mesa if you want that floor. Phone is (310) 324-6611. Mail info@jci-gardena.org.

Our take: buy the $40 if you want a South Bay Saturday with a dish in the ticket and a named taiko-to-J-pop card. Skip if you only have the afternoon and West Covina is closer. Do not count on a cash box.

When: October 10, 2026, 2:00–9:00 p.m.
Where: GVJCI, 1964 W 162nd St, Gardena, CA 90247
