The Gothams nominated Jeon Do-yeon for outstanding lead performance in Possible Love.
The list came out Tuesday in New York. Netflix has the film on Nov. 6, which is how most people will see it.
The Gothams are the New York awards for independent film, and they come out before the bigger prizes. Women and men share one lead list of ten.
Jeon is the only Korean performer on it. Julianne Moore, Ian McKellen, and Mahershala Ali are on it with her.
Possible Love is also nominated for best international feature, and for original screenplay. Lee Chang-dong shares that writing nomination with Oh Jung-mi, his co-writer on Burning.
Lee has said the layoff story sat for years. Oh suggested putting a documentary filmmaker in it, and that was how he found his way back into the script.
Jeon plays Mi-ok, who agrees to be filmed after her husband loses his factory job in a strike that was violently put down. Sul Kyung-gu plays the husband.
Cho Yeo-jeong, from Parasite, is the filmmaker. Zo In-sung plays her husband.
The short U.S. run started Oct. 23. The people page has the rest of the career, including the Cannes win for Secret Sunshine.
Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who directed Drive My Car, has four nominations for All of a Sudden. Four other films also have four, which is the most on this list. Possible Love has three.
Filipiñana is in the same international ten. Rafael Manuel directed it, and the Philippines submitted it for the Oscar.
Lee Byung-hun was nominated here last year, for Park Chan-wook's No Other Choice. That film was up for international feature, a screenplay nomination, and the lead performance.
Youn Yuh-jung was nominated in 2020 for Minari, and she won the Oscar for supporting actress. If the Oscars nominate Jeon for best actress, it would be the first time for a South Korean in that lead category.
Venice gave Possible Love the Silver Lion on Sept. 12, the Grand Jury Prize. South Korea has submitted the film for the international-feature Oscar.
The ceremony is Monday, Nov. 30, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, and it will also be on YouTube.
Our take: if a theater was not convenient last weekend, Nov. 6 is the easy way to see Mi-ok. Moore and McKellen are in the same lead ten, and nobody has won yet.
