Jun Ji-hyun is running every version of herself at once

Jun Ji-hyun just became the first Korean actress to receive NYAFF's Extraordinary Star Asia Award. The more useful story is how many versions of her career are active in the same summer window.

Colony is the engine. Yeon Sang-ho's zombie thriller premiered in Cannes Midnight in May, opened in Korea on May 21, and has drawn about 5.91 million admissions at home. It opened the 25th New York Asian Film Festival in July with Yeon and Jun in the room. Well Go USA brings it to North American theaters on August 28, two weeks after a 4K Train to Busan anniversary run. That is festival prestige, domestic scale, and a practical U.S. booking date in one package.

Nostalgia that still sells tickets

At the same festival cycle, Film Movement Classics is putting Kwak Jae-young's My Sassy Girl back into North American theaters in a new 4K restoration Jun helped make famous in 2001. The NA premiere sat inside NYAFF; limited theatrical dates follow before a later home-video window. For a lot of diaspora viewers, that is the first Jun they ever knew, and it is back on a real screen while she is also the face of a Cannes Midnight genre hit.

Colony is also her first feature return since Assassination in 2015, so the nostalgia and the comeback are not separate PR tracks. They collide. She plays biotechnology professor Kwon Se-jeong opposite Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rok, and Go Soo, leading survivors sealed inside a quarantined facility as the infected keep evolving. Showbox sold the film across more than 120 territories before Cannes. The export machine was already running when the standing ovation photos hit.

The award is the punctuation, not the plot

NYAFF's Extraordinary Star Asia honor lands on that stack, not instead of it. Korean coverage framed her as the first Korean actress to receive the special award, with Colony as the opening title. Her acceptance line stayed simple: film connects people past culture and language, and she was glad to put Colony in front of a New York audience. That is the right tone for a career that never needed one Western breakthrough to feel international.

What comes next is already cast. JTBC's Human X Gumiho, a fantasy romantic comedy with Ji Chang-wook, is set for the first half of 2027 with Amazon Prime as the global streamer. She plays Gu Ja-hong, a two-thousand-year-old gumiho posing as a top star whose powers fail on one human. After a decade away from features and a full zombie summer, she is already booked back into the rom-com lane that first made her a continental name.

Colony proves she can still open genre cinema at Korean scale and walk a Cannes-to-NYAFF-to-Well Go path without looking like she borrowed anyone else's prestige. The Amazon Prime 2027 booking says the next version is already in production. Soft power here is the ability to keep all four lanes legible at once. If you only clocked the NYAFF trophy, put August 28 on the calendar and leave room for the fox drama next year.
