The Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival ran Saturday and Sunday, August 22–23, 2026, 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Randolph Ice Arena (240 North Street), on the Zapusta grounds and adjacent field south of Boston. Cultural Empowerment Organization hosts the ticketed weekend with lantern displays, food vendors, live entertainment, lawn games, crafting workshops, and family activities.

Randolph has one of the highest Asian American population shares in Massachusetts; this festival is the suburb's lantern-forward Mid-Autumn bet, distinct from CCBA's Chinatown street fair and QARI's Quincy moon festival. General admission listed at $8 on the organizer site, with free entry for seniors 65 and older and children under 36 inches (RSVP required for free tiers on recent ticket tables).

Expect thousands of lanterns after dusk, inflatable courses, kids pageant programming, scholarship drawings, and local food vendors on the ice-arena grounds. Free parking on site beats downtown garage hunting, but the lot fills before sunset on Saturday when families arrive for the light display.

Who this was for: South Shore and Randolph families who want a lantern field without Chinatown street crowds, and visitors who already did August Moon in Boston or Quincy and want a night-lit sequel. The 3 p.m. start means plan dinner on site rather than a pre-festival restaurant row.

Chinatown Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival on September 12 is the free Greenway follow-up if you want downtown lion dance after Randolph's ticketed lights.

Our take: buy tickets early online; bring a jacket for late August evenings on the open field. Randolph is the suburban lantern play; Chinatown September fair is the free downtown bookend.

When: August 22–23, 2026 (3:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.)
Where: Randolph Ice Arena, 240 North St, Randolph, MA 02368

Velveting, explained as a Chinese kitchen technique

Velveting is the Chinese prep step that keeps stir-fry chicken and shrimp tender instead of rubbery: a cornstarch-and-oil coat, a rest, then a quick par-cook before the wok. Here is how it works and why diaspora cooks are finally seeing the name match the method.
