The Epic Tale of the Ramayana 2026 at Hawaiʻi Theatre
Still & Moving brings its Diwali Ramayana to Hawaiʻi Theatre Friday, November 6, 2026, with a 6:30 p.m. pre-show talk and 7:00 p.m. curtain.
Ticketed event

Hawaiʻi Theatre Center and Still & Moving present The Epic Tale of the Ramayana on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 1130 Bethel Street in downtown Honolulu. The pre-show talk starts at 6:30 p.m. Curtain is 7:00 p.m. The listing runs to about 9:15 p.m.
Still & Moving Meditation Fellowship and Still & Moving Community Center have marked Diwali with a living Ramayana for nearly two decades. What began as a small community telling has grown into a full theatre, dance, and music production with performers from age 5 to 85. Organizers say 2026 is the first time that tradition moves onto the Hawaiʻi Theatre stage.
The story follows Rama and Sita through exile, Ravana’s abduction of Sita, and the rescue that Diwali’s light-over-darkness framing still points toward. Renée Tillotson gives the 6:30 p.m. pre-show talk on story and tradition. Tickets are on sale through Hawaiʻi Theatre. Secondary resale cards have shown balcony seats near the low $30s and orchestra or loge higher. Ignore those numbers for planning until you see the live theatre inventory. Buy on the official page.
Who this is for: Honolulu readers who want a ticketed Diwali night with narrative and stagecraft rather than a craft fair. Skip it if you need a free daytime matsuri. JCCH Aki Matsuri on November 14 is the Beretania craft-fair weekend instead. Families with very young kids may prefer that daytime fair over a 7:00 p.m. curtain.
The date sits two days before Lakshmi Puja on November 8 and inside the same fall window as HIFF46. Film festival nights and this Ramayana are different plans. Pick the one your group can sit for. Still & Moving’s own page also notes a community pre-sale window earlier in the fall with code RAMAYANA; general sale is through the theatre.
Hawaiʻi Theatre is at 1130 Bethel Street in Chinatown / downtown. Box office hours on the theatre site are limited weekday and Saturday windows; call (808) 528-0506 for ticket desk questions and (808) 791-1303 for theatre administration. Street parking downtown is scarce on Friday nights. Plan a garage or rideshare. Still & Moving’s community address is 1024 Queen Street if you are looking up the producing partner, not the performance door.
Our take: buy through Hawaiʻi Theatre if you want Honolulu’s clearest Diwali stage night. Arrive for the 6:30 talk if the epic is new to anyone in your group, then stay for curtain at 7:00.
When: November 6, 2026, pre-show 6:30 p.m., curtain 7:00 p.m.

Velveting, explained as a Chinese kitchen technique
Velveting is the Chinese prep step that keeps stir-fry chicken and shrimp tender instead of rubbery: a cornstarch-and-oil coat, a rest, then a quick par-cook before the wok. Here is how it works and why diaspora cooks are finally seeing the name match the method.
