The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi is listing its November Craft & Collectibles Fair as Aki Matsuri, 秋祭り, for Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 2454 South Beretania Street. Admission is free. The gift shop and Historical Gallery stay open until 3:00 p.m.

This is a courtyard vendor morning, family and pet friendly, with live entertainment promised. JCCH frames the date as a harvest-season community celebration. Vendor names are still TBA under the Meet Our Vendors block. Do not invent a night-market clock. The fair ends at 1.

A paid Shichi-Go-San keiki kimono sitting is attached through Masako Formals, Expressions portraits, and an Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii blessing. That package is a workshop, not the free fair. Email info@expressionshawaii.net if you want it. Families chasing portraits should book that track separately from the stall stroll.

Free admission includes a note about two-hour parking validation with a JCCH Gift Shop purchase. That is the posted parking cue for Beretania. Regular gallery and gift-shop desk hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Those are building hours, not a second festival day. Phone is 808-945-7633 if you need a last-minute vendor or validation check.

HIFF46 is already the fall film flagship. Official lineup copy now stretches past the live file's Nov 1 Kahala close. Do not treat this craft morning as a second HIFF. Toronto's Aki no Tabi is the same Saturday, 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., a different ocean and a longer evening program. Autumn Okinawa Dance Matsuri has already cleared September on Oʻahu, so Beretania is the dated Japanese courtyard stop left for mid-November.

Who this is for: Mōʻiliʻili families who already use the JCCH courtyard for craft mornings. Skip it if you wanted a Diwali mela. None posted on Oʻahu with a primary 2026 URL.

Beretania is a short hop from UH Mānoa and the McCully corridor. Arrive early if you need street or garage space before validation kicks in. Pets are welcome on the page copy, so plan leash space in a crowded courtyard.

JCCH also runs Craft & Collectibles editions in other months, including an October Health & Wellness card and a Holiday fair later in the year. November is the Aki Matsuri branding. If you only have one Saturday, this is the autumn harvest label, not the December holiday card.

Our take: 9 a.m. if you want first pick of stalls. Leave by 1 unless you are staying for the shop or gallery. Refresh the vendor list the week of, and treat Shichi-Go-San as optional homework, not the fair itself.

When: November 14, 2026 (9 a.m.–1 p.m.; shop and gallery to 3 p.m.)
Where: Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi, 2454 S Beretania St, Honolulu, HI 96826

Velveting, explained as a Chinese kitchen technique

Velveting is the Chinese prep step that keeps stir-fry chicken and shrimp tender instead of rubbery: a cornstarch-and-oil coat, a rest, then a quick par-cook before the wok. Here is how it works and why diaspora cooks are finally seeing the name match the method.
