Toro Nagashi Festival 2026 at Japanese Friendship Garden

Toro Nagashi at the Japanese Friendship Garden runs Friday and Saturday, August 7–8, 2026 in Balboa Park. The festival pairs daytime vendors, food, sake and beer in the lower garden, and cultural performances in the Inamori Pavilion with evening floating-lantern ceremonies on the lower stream. Toro Nagashi honors those who have passed; guests float LED-lit lanterns on the water as a symbol of peace and remembrance.

Daytime programming on August 8 included taiko from La Jolla Taiko, kendo demos, shishimai, koto, and daytime lantern ceremonies in the pavilion schedule posted by the garden. Merchant booths and food vendors fill the lower garden paths. Lantern pre-orders ran through August 6 at $15; day-of lanterns sold at the lower gift shop while supplies lasted.

The ticketed evening ceremony ($99 per person in 2026) bundled admission, one floating lantern, choice of a 7 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. float slot, a bento box, and one beverage ticket. Check-in began at 5 p.m. Those evening blocks sold out ahead of the festival, which has become the garden's signature Obon-season night. If you missed a float ticket, daytime festival admission still carried access to performances and vendors.

The garden sits at 2215 Pan American Road East inside Balboa Park, a short walk from the International Cottages. August 8 also held House of China Panda Fest on the cottage lawn the same day, so one Saturday could stack free Chinese programming, paid garden festival energy, and an evening lantern float if you held tickets.

Toro Nagashi grew from a single evening ceremony into a two-day garden festival as demand for Obon-season programming outgrew one float slot. The Inamori Pavilion stage lets the garden book taiko and dance without closing the lower stream path for daytime visitors.
