5 anime to watch before Comic-Con week actually starts talking
Five anime that make this week’s San Diego panels land: a modern Gundam on-ramp, My Hero Academia after its true finale, Castle in the Sky for Ghibli’s 40th, Sailor Moon for the Sunday room, and one comfort rewatch for Otakon recovery.

5. Spy × Family (2022–, Crunchyroll / Hulu in many regions)
Start here if your brain needs a palate cleanser between heavier franchise talk. The Forger household’s spy-telepath-assassin sitcom is short-arc friendly, joke-dense, and still the safest “put something on while packing a badge lanyard” pick of the bunch.
It also travels well into Otakon weekend chatter, where family cosplay and lighter floor energy show up as often as mecha debate.
4. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal (2014–2016, and classic 90s on various platforms)
Sunday’s Comic-Con room includes a Sailor Moon 35th anniversary fandom panel. You do not need the entire 200-episode 90s run before then. A Crystal season, or a handful of classic arcs, is enough to remember why magical-girl grammar still organizes half the Exhibit Hall.
If you grew up on the DIC dub, rewatch a few episodes in the original Japanese with subs. The panel conversation will make more sense when people talk influence, not only nostalgia merch.
3. Castle in the Sky (1986, Max / other Ghibli windows by region)
Saturday’s Ghibli programming celebrates forty years of Castle in the Sky, Studio Ghibli’s first feature, with production stories from Hirokatsu Kihara and background painter Yôichi Nishikawa. One film. Two hours. Immediate homework.
Watch it before the panel if you can. The cloud work and adventure pacing are the whole point of hearing a background painter talk about Ghibli craft in a Comic-Con room.
2. My Hero Academia (2016–2026, Crunchyroll)
Thursday’s Ballroom 20 panel marks ten years with English dub leads who have been there since the beginning. The series has a true endpoint now: FINAL SEASON wrapped in 2025, and the epilogue special More landed on Crunchyroll in May 2026.
You will not finish eight seasons before Thursday. Aim for Season 1 plus the final stretch if you are catching up, or just More if you already lived through the war arcs and want the reunion energy the panel will lean on.
1. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022–2023, Crunchyroll; also free on GundamInfo in many regions)
Thursday is Gundam day. Bandai Namco Filmworks is unveiling a brand-new Gundam anime at Comic-Con, then carrying the same news on a worldwide YouTube program at 11:00 a.m. PT. The Witch from Mercury is the cleanest modern on-ramp: school setting, corporate intrigue, complete two-season run, girl lead, and far less “which Universal Century movie do I start with” panic.
If the new title announcement sends you deeper, the official Gundam channels still host a lot of catalog free. Start modern, then wander backward once you know you care.

Con week rewards people who show up with one or two shared references, not a finished checklist of every franchise on the floor. Watch Witch from Mercury before the Thursday stream, keep Castle in the Sky ready for Saturday’s Ghibli talk, and let Spy × Family cover the travel day. The panels will still surprise you. At least the group chat will know what planet you are on.
