Scene Report: the late-July weekend map for diaspora planners
From July 23 through early August, North America stacks Comic-Con, Anime Matsuri, a West Coast Obon weekend, Toronto Chinatown, Vegas Japan expo, and Otakon. This Scene Report sorts the weekend by trip type so you pick one lane instead of doomscrolling five metros.
The Goldscene Desk
Late July is when the culture calendar stops being a nice-to-have tab and starts fighting your hotel budget. Comic-Con, anime cons, Obon weekends, Chinatown festivals, and a Japan expo all land inside roughly ten days. You do not need every listing. You need a lane.
The badge weekends
San Diego Comic-Con runs July 23–26 at the Convention Center, with Preview Night July 22. Attendee badges are sold out, which is the whole planning story: if you are not already badged, treat downtown as a satellite weekend of pop-ups and overflow energy, not a walk-up Exhibit Hall plan. Anime Matsuri overlaps the same Thu–Sun window at Houston's George R. Brown Convention Center for its 20th anniversary. That is the practical Southwest alternative if SDCC was never in the cards and you still want panels, artist alley, and late-night con math.
Otakon follows immediately after, July 31–August 2 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. DC readers who sat out Comic-Con still get a full Asian pop-culture weekend without flying to California. Book Metro-adjacent hotels early; the Green/Yellow Convention Center stop is the whole logistics thesis.
The Obon and outdoor lane
If your weekend wants lanterns more than badge lines, the West Coast Obon cluster is the move. SoCal stacks Higashi Honganji, West Los Angeles, and Zenshuji around July 25, with Vista for San Diego County and White River in the Seattle orbit. SF closes the weekend with Japantown Bon Odori on July 26.
These are community festivals first. Arrive for odori, stay for food lines, leave room for parking and heat. Pair with the Los Angeles or San Diego neighborhood guides if you are turning one Obon into a longer SoCal stay.
The city-festival lane
Not everyone wants a convention wristband. Chicago Chinatown Summer Fair and Toronto Chinatown Festival both land July 25 for street-food and parade energy. Vegas gets Discover Japan Expo the same weekend. DMV planners can stack Asia in a Bite DC and the Annandale night market without leaving the Beltway.
Our take
Pick one identity for the weekend. Badge people should stop pretending they will also do a full Obon circuit the same Saturday. Outdoor festival people should ignore sold-out Comic-Con discourse and go where the food lines move. If you are already aiming at August 8, save the stamina for Head in the Clouds and treat late July as a local tune-up, not a second mega-trip. The calendar is full on purpose. Your job is to refuse half of it.
