Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man just became India’s biggest Hollywood film ever
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is India’s highest-grossing Hollywood film after about $52.8M in 11 days, passing Avatar: The Way of Water in a market local cinema still dominates.

Eleven days into its India run, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the highest-grossing Hollywood film that market has ever logged. The Tom Holland and Zendaya sequel opened there July 30, a day ahead of the wider world, and a $10.6 million weekend pushed the local cume to about $52.8 million, past James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water.
Indian trade boards put the same stretch past the Rs 400 crore net club and near or over Rs 500 crore gross. Use Deadline’s dollar line as the clean international receipt. The rupee boards move with every afternoon update.
The name under the title card is what makes this our story. Destin Daniel Cretton, the Maui Japanese American director of Shang-Chi and the first Asian American filmmaker to steer a Spider-Man feature, is the one who got to swing the tentpole.
Our read: celebrate the byline before you meme Tom Holland again. Franchise heat is real. Who Marvel and Sony handed the keys to still matters.
From group-home short to India crown
Cretton’s path is the opposite of overnight casting. Short Term 12 grew out of years working with at-risk teens and became an SXSW breakout. Just Mercy kept that institutional listening inside a studio drama. Shang-Chi made him the director of Marvel’s first Asian-led tentpole. Then Kevin Feige floated Spidey after Cretton stepped off an Avengers track that no longer fit.
Gold House marked the Spidey milestone at a July family dinner with Holland, Zendaya, Feige, and Amy Pascal in the room. The India record is the louder receipt: Asia’s biggest theatrical market buying a Hollywood spider with a diaspora director on the call sheet.
Worldwide, Brand New Day is already in rare air, around $1.67 billion after roughly twelve days and the second-fastest film to clear $1 billion overseas after Avengers: Endgame. India is not the whole story. It is the clearest proof that the Cretton chapter is traveling beyond a North American opening weekend.
Still a guest in India’s room
Hollywood and other foreign films usually hold only about 10 to 15 percent of India’s box office. Local titles own the rest. In 2025, international films took a 10 percent share. Avatar: Fire and Ash led Hollywood there at $26.4 million, while Hindi action epic Dhurandhar made about $104.8 million. First-half 2026 kept international at roughly 8 percent.
That humility matters. Cretton’s Spidey set a Hollywood ceiling inside a market that still prefers its own hits. Language splits on strong days still show English and Hindi carrying most of the load, with Tamil and Telugu as smaller lanes. This weekend brings local competition in Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2. Toxic, with Yash, is dated August 26. Ramayana: Part 1 is already on the Diwali horizon with Sony attached internationally.
Our take
Pair the India crown with our Cretton profile and the indie-to-tentpole directors list. The pattern is the point: care work scaled into Marvel machinery, then a market that will still buy a web-slinger if the franchise math works.
Our verdict: keep the Cretton byline in the headline and the humility in the body. India’s box office is not a Marvel province. It just handed one diaspora director the loudest Hollywood receipt of the week, in a room that still belongs mostly to someone else.
