Free admission

Taste of Aloha is listing a free night market for Friday, November 6, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Navy Exchange, 4725 Bougainville Drive in Honolulu. The Eventeny card frames food trucks, food tents, specialty drinks, baked goods, retail vendors, and a live DJ. All ages. Free admission. Customer parking is free in the NEX lot outside the blue barricades.

Bougainville Drive sits on the Pearl Harbor / Aiea side of the island, the westbound errand corridor for military families and nearby neighborhoods. Taste of Aloha's own copy is about island makers and family nights. Expect a mix of local food and retail rather than a single-ethnicity stage program. Bring cash and a card. Vendor lines move with the dinner rush. Four hours is short enough for kids and long enough for a plate and a second stall.

The same Friday, The Epic Tale of the Ramayana has a 6:30 p.m. pre-show and 7:00 curtain at Hawaiʻi Theatre on Bethel Street. Downtown Chinatown and the NEX are opposite ends of the H-1 problem at rush hour. Pick the night market if you want an outdoor food evening west of town. Pick the theatre if Diwali stagecraft is the plan. JCCH Aki Matsuri is the next Saturday morning on Beretania, free, with a shorter craft-fair clock and a Japanese Cultural Center house feel.

Base access rules at Pearl Harbor facilities can change. Confirm whether your party can enter the NEX lot without a military ID before you drive. The Eventeny page does not print a gate policy beyond free parking outside the blue barricades. Call the NEX or watch Taste of Aloha's event updates if anyone in the car is a civilian visitor new to that corridor. Do not assume a tourist rental car gets the same lot access as a base sticker.

Who this is for: west-side and central Oʻahu families who want a free Friday food market without buying a theatre ticket. Skip it if you needed a Japanese Cultural Center craft morning. That is November 14 on Beretania.

Arrive closer to 4:00 for shorter food lines. Leave before 8:00 if you have an early Saturday. Check Eventeny the day of for any weather or lot notes.

When: November 6, 2026 (4:00–8:00 p.m.)
Where: Navy Exchange, 4725 Bougainville Dr, Honolulu, HI 96818

Listing on Eventeny.

Velveting, explained as a Chinese kitchen technique

Velveting is the Chinese prep step that keeps stir-fry chicken and shrimp tender instead of rubbery: a cornstarch-and-oil coat, a rest, then a quick par-cook before the wok. Here is how it works and why diaspora cooks are finally seeing the name match the method.
