Calgary, Alberta · 197 1 Street Southwest

Calgary Marathi Association is listing its 2026 Diwali day for Saturday, November 7, at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre, 197 1 Street SW. The morning block, अजि सोनियाचा दिनु, runs 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. The afternoon Diwali Social starts at 12:30 p.m. after lunch. Registration and tea open at 7:45 a.m. Diwali Social check-in opens at noon. The building sits in downtown Chinatown, not in a northeast banquet hall.

The morning program is built around abhang compositions associated with Sant Dnyaneshwar, the kind of Marathi bhakti repertoire many families know from radio even when the older language is hard to follow on the page. CMA frames the set as a chance to hear those songs on a stage with the meaning explained in the room. After 10:45 there is a changeover window. Guests who hold Diwali Social tickets can use that stretch to change into costume before lunch.

The afternoon is billed as Movie Magic. Organizers want Bollywood and Marathi film characters, glam party wear, or festive Indian dress for adults and kids. Lunch starts the social, then music, performances, and a cinema-themed floor. This is a community association program, not a free civic plaza. Tickets sit on Tugoz through the CMA event page. Exact member and guest prices were not printed on the public schedule page when we checked, so buy on the live ticket link rather than guessing a number from an old year.

Parking is the usual Chinatown problem. CMA names Impark at the main entrance and a larger lot behind the building. Arrive early for the morning set if you want a seat near the front. For the afternoon only, noon check-in is the safer mark. The Chinese Cultural Centre already hosts other community nights; this is CMA borrowing a downtown room with kitchen and stage capacity, the same pattern the association used for earlier cultural dates.

YYC Noodle Festival is already running citywide the same week. Indian Society Utsav is the bigger Genesis Centre dinner-and-stage night on November 14. November 7 is the Marathi day before Diwali proper. Do not stack Genesis and this Chinese Cultural Centre card as one blur. They are a week apart and different organizers.

Who this is for: Marathi families and friends who want a full Saturday with a morning program and a costume afternoon, downtown. Skip it if you only wanted a free outdoor mela. That is not this room.

Call or email CMA through cmacalgary.ca if you need access notes or child ticket rules before you buy. Bring the confirmation the ticket platform sends. Dress for the afternoon theme if that is the half you care about; the morning is quieter and does not need Gabbar Singh energy.

When: November 7, 2026 (morning 8:30–10:45 a.m.; Diwali Social from 12:30 p.m.)
Where: Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre, 197 1 St SW, Calgary, AB

Velveting, explained as a Chinese kitchen technique

Velveting is the Chinese prep step that keeps stir-fry chicken and shrimp tender instead of rubbery: a cornstarch-and-oil coat, a rest, then a quick par-cook before the wok. Here is how it works and why diaspora cooks are finally seeing the name match the method.
