Asian Horror and Thriller Streaming Guide (2026)

Shudder has the cursed tapes and Indonesian folk. Netflix has the monster series. Train to Busan is in theaters this week if you want the zombie movie in a room before Colony opens August 28.

Review cadence: Recheck Shudder and Netflix windows before October.

August is when the Halloween queue should start. The evenings are still warm. Nobody has texted you a remake list yet.

Search Netflix for Asian horror and Sweet Home comes up. Apartment monsters, Song Kang, three seasons, finished. A good night if that is the mood.

The cursed tape is on Shudder. So is the village that will not explain itself.

We already put five films in order on the late-summer list. Use that when you want a week. Use this when you just need to know which app to open.

What is on

Typical U.S. homes as of mid-August. Canada usually matches on Netflix originals and Shudder. Check your app before you promise anyone.

Netflix

Incantation is the horror movie that is actually on there. A mother, a broken taboo, found footage from Taiwan. Kevin Ko directed it.

Kingdom is the series if you want zombies with a palace plot. Ju Ji-hoon and Bae Doona. Two seasons and Ashin of the North, then you are done.

Sweet Home is done too. All of Us Are Dead is not. Season 2 wrapped in February and Netflix still has not named a night, so only start that if you can live with the ending you already have.

Shudder

This is where Ringu sits next to Impetigore. Ringu is on Tubi as well.

Exit 8 showed up July 17. Kazunari Ninomiya, from Arashi, walks a Tokyo hallway that sends you back to the start if you miss something.

Dark Nuns arrived August 3. Song Hye-kyo and Jeon Yeo-been pick up an exorcism. It spins off Jang Jae-hyun's The Priests. He later made Exhuma, which is the grave movie if church ritual is not the mood.

Joko Anwar's Indonesian films are still on the service: Impetigore, Satan's Slaves, the sequel. The Book of Sijjin and Illiyyin landed August 1. Possession, Muslim mythology, and a lot of gore.

Thai folk is The Medium. Banjong Pisanthanakun made it with Na Hong-jin producing. Our Southeast Asia Scene Report is the longer read on why this lane travels.

In a theater

Well Go USA put Train to Busan back out in 4K on August 14. Limited cities. Check your town.

Colony, Yeon Sang-ho's new one with Jun Ji-hyun, opens August 28. See the train on a big screen first if you never have. We wrote about Jun Ji-hyun's year if you want that tab after.

The Wailing is the long night at home. Rain, rumor, no clean villain. Put it on when nobody has to be up at 7.

If you want an order for the week, the five-film list already has one. Squid Game is not the horror row, even if Netflix keeps suggesting it.

Frequently asked questions

Are these all horror?
Yes. Beef and Drishyam live on other pages. This one is ghosts, folk ritual, zombies, and cursed media.
Do I need Shudder?
For Ringu, Impetigore, The Medium, or Exit 8 without renting each one, yes. Netflix will cover monsters and Joseon zombies.
Where is Train to Busan?
In theaters this week as a 4K anniversary print, and free on Hoopla if your library card works. Not on Netflix.

Lists

5 Asian horror movies for late summer

Five Asian horror films that build a Halloween runway without a drama dump: Ringu for cursed-media dread, The Wailing for folk fog, Train to Busan for kinetic zombie cinema (plus its August 4K theatrical return), Exhuma for occult blockbuster scale, and Impetigore for Indonesian folklore prestige.

Who's Rising

Jun Ji-hyun is running every version of herself at once

Jun Ji-hyun's summer is a stacked career, not a single award night: My Sassy Girl in 4K, Colony from Cannes Midnight to 5.91 million admissions to NYAFF's first Korean actress Extraordinary Star Asia honor, Well Go USA theaters on August 28, and Human X Gumiho already booked for Amazon Prime in 2027.

What to Watch

Why Southeast Asian film hasn't had its K-drama moment yet

Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese films are smashing local box offices, and Netflix is greenlighting Southeast Asia faster than ever. The K-drama moment still has not arrived because the region is many languages, theatrical-first, and horror-shaped, not one serialized export machine.
