Can a rom-com goddess hold the slot Agent Kim vacated?
Episode 2 of MBC’s Married Woman Killer (유부녀 킬러, also titled A Bona Fide Killer) aired Saturday and averaged 8.0 percent nationwide, per Nielsen Korea figures reported Sunday. That is up 0.6 points from the 7.4 percent premiere on July 31, and it put the show first among Friday-Saturday dramas. The broadcast peaked at 10.6 percent. Among viewers ages 20 to 54, it was the most-watched program of any kind on Saturday at 3.0 percent.
Gong Hyo-jin plays Yoo Bo-na, a Durumi Electronics sales manager and working mom who is also the contract sniper known as Kingfisher. Jung Joon-won is her reporter husband. Lee Sang-yi is the detective circling closer. Kim Eun-hee wrote it from the Kakao Webtoon of the same name. This is Gong’s first MBC drama in about 15 years, since The Greatest Love in 2011, and a deliberate pivot out of the romantic-comedy shorthand that made her a household name.
Why the climb matters now
Agent Kim Reactivated closed July with peaks above 23 percent. That is an unfair comparison for any follow-on, and the industry knew it. The useful test was whether the next Friday-Saturday title would open soft and drift, or whether viewers would stay in the appointment habit for something tonally different. Two episodes in, Married Woman Killer is climbing, not apologizing.
Episode 2 pushed the double life into a tighter corner. Bo-na faces Oh Hyun-nam (Ha Yul-ri), a witness tied to a past Kingfisher hit who joins the company under a poison specialty and pressures Bo-na by targeting her husband. The episode ends with Bo-na drinking the poison without hesitation. That is not rom-com pacing. It is the show asking whether Gong’s warmth still sells when the plot refuses to stay cute.
On the same Saturday, Spooky in Love episode 5 hit 5.5 percent nationwide, its highest Saturday so far and first in its cable time slot. Our Weekend Stream already split the night: Spooky as the warmer Netflix appointment, Gong as the sharper MBC bet. The ratings agree that both lanes have room.
Where to watch, and what to watch for
International viewers can stream on Rakuten Viki in supported regions, with domestic play on MBC and local Korean platforms. It is not a Netflix original. Episode 3 lands Friday, August 7 at 9:50 p.m. KST, the same night Stray Kids drop THIS & THAT and Flex x Cop 2 and Our Sticky Love enter the August premiere pile. Protect the appointment if you are current. If you are starting cold, two episodes is still a clean sample before the midweek stack gets loud.
Our take
Gong did not need another soft rom-com to stay famous. She needed proof that an MBC return could carry assassin logistics, maternity-leave jokes, and a poisoned-husband cliffhanger without losing the audience that showed up for the premise. 8 percent after two episodes is not Agent Kim math. It is proof the pivot is landing.
Our verdict: treat this as the August appointment drama until the climb breaks. Watch whether episode 3 holds the Friday-Saturday lead once premiere-week curiosity fades, and whether Viki diaspora chatter keeps pace with the domestic rating. The rom-com goddess asked for a harder lane. So far, the slot is answering yes.
