Diwali 2026 Events Guide: North America Melas, Squares, and Temple Nights
A metro planner for Diwali 2026 across the U.S. and Canada: which weekends are public melas, which nights are temple Annakut, and how November 8 fits the calendar.

Last updated:
Review cadence: Weekly through November 8; confirm hours on organizer pages before you go.
Lakshmi Puja lands on Sunday, November 8, 2026. That is the home night for a lot of households: lamps at the door, a tray of sweets, someone arguing gently about which muhurat screenshot to trust.
The public version of Diwali in North America starts weeks earlier. From early October through mid-November, cities put stages in fairgrounds, civic squares, and park lawns so families can celebrate when parking and babysitters are easier. The flyer says Diwali. The calendar often says Saturday, two weeks out.
If you grew up with the holiday, you already feel the split. One night is for the house and the mandir. The other nights are for the auntie who texts a Google Drive flyer, the cousin who only wants fireworks, and the friend who will only come if there is a kids zone with bathrooms. This guide is for picking one good public night without treating every WhatsApp poster as equal.
We sort by kind of evening first, then by metro, using dates already on Goldscene's Culture Calendar. Hours move. Confirm the organizer page the week of. Jewelry fittings and hotel gifts for the same season live on our Diwali luxury calendar. That page is shopping and campaigns. This one is where you actually stand outside.
How the month actually works
Navratri and Dussehra open the emotional runway in mid-October. Garba nights and Ravan dahan weekends bleed into the first big Diwali melas. Then the civic machine takes over: late October saturdays when half the continent seems to host something called Festival of Lights. November 7 is the last big public Saturday. November 8 is the holiday.
Think in three layers.
Home night: November 8. Many families stay in, visit a mandir, or both. Local sunset sets the puja window. A forwarded muhurat from Mumbai or Edison is the wrong clock if you are lighting lamps in Frisco.
Public weekends: Mid-October through November 7. This is where Times Square, Pleasanton, Nathan Phillips Square, Edison, Frisco, and Seattle Center live. Organizers want daylight for kids zones and dark for fireworks or tower lights. That is why so many "Diwali 2026" posters are actually October dates.
Temple and Annakut dates: Often on or next to November 8. ISKCON Houston and BAPS Sacramento are examples on our calendar. Mandir hours are their own story. A park mela does not replace Annakut, and Annakut is not a craft room with puppet Ramleela.
Our take: pick the layer you actually want, then pick the metro date. Chasing every Saturday is how you arrive at November 8 already tired.
Pick the kind of night first
Fireworks and fairgrounds melas. Ticketed or high-production days with Ravan dahan, carnival rides, and late finales. These are the "we drove an hour and wore sneakers" nights. AIA's Dussehra Diwali Dhamaka in Pleasanton on October 17 is the Bay Area example. Dallas Festival of Lights in McKinney on October 24 is the North Texas cousin. Budget for tickets, parking, and a long last hour waiting for the sky.
Municipal and civic free days. City parks, plazas, and recreation departments. Edison at Papaianni Park on November 7, Cupertino Memorial Park on October 17, Round Rock on October 24, and Chandler City Hall on November 7 (free, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the city card) sit here. Crowds are real. The vibe is neighborhood pride more than arena production. Bring a parking plan before you bring a rangoli reel.
Plaza and tower spectacles. Built for a broad public and a good photo, not a quiet puja. Diwali at Times Square on October 24 and Toronto's Nathan Phillips Festival of Lights on October 24–25 are the clear cases. Go if you want the city to say the holiday out loud. Leave early if crowds make you miserable.
Indoor family and museum afternoons. Shorter, seated, often ticketed or RSVP. Asia Society New York on November 7 (1 to 4 p.m.) and Flushing Town Hall on November 1 fit kids who need a bathroom and a chair more than a field. These are the dates where a grandparents-and-toddlers group chat actually enjoys itself.
Temple Annakut. Food offering, darshan lines, community kitchen energy. Keep November 8 open if that is your household's night. The public calendar can wait.

New York corridor
October 24 is Midtown's postcard. Diwali at Times Square is free on Broadway between 46th and 48th, with a diya countdown on One Times Square once the organizer posts the hour. It is loud, photogenic, and built for people who want the city to host the holiday in public. Come for the plaza. Do not invent a headliner from last year's bill.
The same Saturday, Queens runs a different Diwali entirely. The Diwali Motorcade starts at Phil "Scooter" Rizzuto Park, free and open to the public, with festivities from 1 p.m. and a Liberty Avenue route through Little Guyana. Decorated cars, tassa, Indo-Caribbean energy. If Times Square is the tourist-facing holiday, the motorcade is the neighborhood carrying its own light down the street. Pick one. You will not do both well.
Queens also gets a seated afternoon at Flushing Town Hall on November 1. Park Avenue gets Asia Society with The Culture Tree on November 7: puppet Ramleela, crafts, storytime, register early. These are the soft landings for small kids and anyone who does not want to stand in a crush for three hours.
Central Jersey's big municipal night is Edison on November 7 at Papaianni Park. Recreation-facing coverage has listed 5 to 9 p.m., with a November 14 rain date. Confirm on the township flyer. That park sits in Oak Tree Road country: grocers, jewelers, and the weekend restaurant load people mean when they say Little India. The municipal field is the public version of that corridor. Asia Society at 1 p.m. and Edison at 5 look stackable on a calendar. In Lincoln Tunnel math, they fight.
Our take for the corridor: Times Square for the city postcard. Motorcade for Queens street light. Edison for the field. Asia Society or Flushing when kids need chairs. November 8 stays home unless your mandir says otherwise.
Bay Area and Orange County
October 17 asks a Bay Area question: fireworks or daylight park?
Pleasanton's AIA Dhamaka at Alameda County Fairgrounds is the ticketed answer: noon to 11 p.m., Ravan dahan, fireworks, vendors, carnival rides. It is the Saturday you clear for sneakers and a late drive home. Cupertino's city festival at Memorial Park is the free civic answer the same day, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Same South Bay Saturday, different stamina ask. Pleasanton is the night. Cupertino is the afternoon with an earlier exit.
October 24 then stacks East Bay and South Bay community melas: FOG Fremont, San Jose Diwali Carnival, and Walnut Creek's street fair. Each one is a campus with its own parking story. Pick the city you already shop in. Do not try to drive all three.
Orange County's public day is Ektaa Diwali Fest at Great Park Live in Irvine, October 24, 1 to 9 p.m. The City of Irvine calendar is the lock; the Ektaa Center is the community partner. It is the OC date that feels like a real outdoor festival floor, not a small city-hall lawn. For more county anchors outside Diwali season, see our Orange County events guide.
After the holiday, Yerba Buena Gardens hosts Bhangra and Beats on November 13 if you want a downtown San Francisco night-market mood once Lakshmi Puja is done. Useful if November 8 was homebound and you still want one public night with friends.
Texas: DFW, Houston, Austin
North Texas treats Diwali like a season, not a single Saturday. Assembly Park in Plano opens October 11 with a shorter Central Green afternoon. Southlake and the McKinney Festival of Lights land October 24 for Town Square and fairgrounds energy. Then Frisco Diwali Mela at Kaleidoscope Park on November 1 closes the civic runway: free with registration, Raam Leela, kids zone, and a drone-and-laser finale. The site still says Saturday; November 1 is a Sunday. Trust the date and clock, not the leftover weekday label.
If you only do one DFW night and you want free parking plus a reason to stay after dark, Frisco is the cleaner bet. Register for the QR code even if you think you will "just swing by." Capacity planning is why they ask.
Houston spreads the month so nobody has to choose between culture campus and temple kitchen. Asia Society Texas on October 18 is the family Lights afternoon. HTX Diwali at POST and Bellaire share October 24 for downtown-adjacent and suburb scales. ISKCON Houston holds Diwali and Annakut on November 8–9, which is the holiday itself. Levy Park follows on November 14 if you want one more civic festival after the puja night.
Austin readers can stay local with Round Rock's free festival on October 24. You do not need a DFW drive for a park-stage Saturday.
Our take for Texas: Frisco or Pleasanton-style production if you want the big outdoor night. ISKCON or your mandir if November 8 is non-negotiable. Houston's calendar is generous enough that you can do a public Saturday and Annakut without pretending they are the same evening.
Toronto and the GTA
The GTA starts early and stays busy. Diwali RazzMatazz fills Mississauga Celebration Square October 9–11, which is useful if your Peel friends refuse to come downtown. Two weeks later, the city center takes over: the Nathan Phillips Festival of Lights runs October 24–25, noon to 9 p.m., free, with LED installations and a musical pyrotechnic show from City Hall towers. North York Diwali Fest at Mel Lastman Square overlaps that weekend if you live north and do not want Queen and Bay.
Nathan Phillips is the downtown light-and-stage production. North York is the closer square for a lot of households. Same weekend mood, different commute.
Closer to the holiday, Diwali Milan at Vishnu Mandir in Richmond Hill on November 7 is a temple-campus evening. That is the GTA date for people who want mandir energy without waiting until Sunday alone. It is not a civic-square light show, and that is the point.
Our take: Nathan Phillips if you want downtown lights and fireworks. RazzMatazz if Peel is home base. Richmond Hill if November 7 is your temple night. Leave November 8 for the house unless your family already plans otherwise.
Seattle and Metro Vancouver
Seattle's easiest walk-up day is Festál's Diwali: Lights of India at the Seattle Center Armory on November 7, starting at noon. Free, indoor, produced with Northwest Share inside the city's year-round Festál series. Eastside temple and community nights often sit behind membership portals or RSVP forms. The Armory is the simpler door if you have kids and do not want to negotiate a login.
Earlier, WAIA's Diwali Mela in Bothell on October 24 is free with a form if you want an Eastside campus before the holiday week. Useful when Seattle Center Saturday is already booked with relatives.
Metro Vancouver's dated free civic listing on our calendar is RED FM Diwali Dhamaka at Surrey Civic Plaza on November 7, noon to 8 p.m., free via Eventbrite. The city calendar had not reprinted the booking when we filed it, so recheck Surrey's page the week of. Separate Diwali Fest community dates also land at Roundhouse in Vancouver on November 7 and Surrey City Hall on November 15; those need free preregistration on diwalifest.ca. Vancouver's public calendar is more intimate and registration-heavy than Toronto's square festivals. Plan for a form, not a walk-up crush.
Elsewhere worth a pin
Washington, D.C. area. The DMV actually has a clean ladder: UHJT / Rajdhani Diwali Mela in Greenbelt on October 10 for the school-campus mela, Ballston Quarter on October 16 for an easy Arlington evening, then the indoor Heritage India Festival at Dulles Town Center Expo Center in Sterling on October 24–25. Heritage India is shopping, food, and a full expo-hall day; door tickets only, free parking, kids 5 and under free. Philadelphia gets the same festival brand October 31–November 1 if you are on that corridor.
Chicago. Still thin for a large civic Diwali mela. The long-running Diwali Mela Chicago site has not locked a 2026 date after a 2025 cancel. Our calendar pin is Aurora at Metea Valley High School on October 24. Do not invent a Navy Pier night. Watch temple Annakut listings closer to November 8, and treat anything that still calls October 20 "Diwali" as Dussehra confusion.
Atlanta. The clearest outdoor civic market is Johns Creek's Diwali Celebration on November 7, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Boardwalk at Town Center: vendors, food, entertainment, family scale. Diwali in Dunwoody is the same Saturday at Dunwoody Nature Center if you want the park-campus version. Atlanta is strong on civic and temple dates, lighter on Times Square-scale production.
Sacramento. Sanskrity Folsom on October 10, Rancho Cordova on October 25, then BAPS Annakut in Mather on November 1. That last date is the temple kitchen night if your household keeps Annakut before or near the holiday.
San Diego. Deepotsav at Balboa Park on October 3 opens the California public season at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. Earliest big park stage in this guide. Confirm door price on the organizer side closer to the date; listings have disagreed.
Phoenix area. Chandler's free Festival of Lights is Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall courtyard (175 S. Arizona Ave), per the city events page and performer packet. Midday civic, vendors, performances, done before late afternoon. Not a fireworks night, and not yet on our Culture Calendar.
Calgary. NICC Diwali Fest on October 30, then RED FM at Dera Banquet on November 1. Hall energy, not an outdoor plaza. Dress for Alberta November even if the room is warm.
Practical notes that save a weekend
Bring a layer for October and November evenings. Civic squares get cold after sunset even when the afternoon felt fine. Fairgrounds hold wind in a way parking lots do not warn you about.
If a free event asks for Eventbrite or a QR registration, do it the night you decide to go. Capacity caps are real at Frisco and Surrey-style plaza dates. "Free" still sometimes means "free if you reserved."
Same-day stacking only works when the clocks leave a real gap. Asia Society 1 to 4 p.m. and Edison 5 to 9 p.m. look adjacent on a spreadsheet. In traffic they fight. Pleasanton until 11 p.m. and an early Cupertino park day are a better same-Saturday pair because one ends before the other gets serious.
Temple hours and mela hours answer different questions. A fireworks finale is not Annakut. Annakut is not a kids craft room. Indo-Caribbean motorcade energy is not the same as a Gujarati samaj park mela, and neither is a city recreation field day. Matching the kind of night to your people matters more than matching the word Diwali on the flyer.
If you are traveling between metros, October 24 is the crowded national Saturday: Times Square, Queens Motorcade, FOG Fremont, Ektaa Irvine, HTX POST, McKinney, Round Rock, Heritage India Sterling, Aurora. November 7 is the last public Saturday before the holiday: Edison, Asia Society, Seattle Festál, Surrey, Johns Creek, Chandler. Plan flights around the layer you care about, not every poster in the group chat.
Full listings live on the Culture Calendar. Broader fall weekends and night markets sit on the Asian culture festival calendar.
Our take
You do not need every Saturday. You need one public night that matches how your household actually celebrates, then a clear November 8 plan.
If you want the photogenic city Diwali, go early for Times Square or Nathan Phillips and leave before the late crush. If you want the community field, Edison, Frisco, Pleasanton, or Cupertino will feel more like home than a Midtown countdown. If kids need chairs and crafts, book Asia Society or Flushing and skip the fairgrounds. If Queens is your map, the motorcade may matter more than the tower lights.
The holiday itself is still Sunday, November 8. Treat the public weekends as helpful extras, not a replacement for that night if your household keeps Lakshmi Puja. Use the Culture Calendar, recheck the organizer page midweek, and leave room for the lamps at home.
Frequently asked questions
- When is Diwali 2026?
- Lakshmi Puja, the main home night, falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026. Public melas and civic festivals in North America run from early October through mid-November, often on the Saturdays before that date.
- Why are so many Diwali festivals before November 8?
- Organizers book weekends when families can travel and parks can host stages. November 8 stays the home and temple night for many households. A Times Square Saturday and a Lakshmi Puja Sunday are different kinds of evenings.
- Which Diwali events are free?
- Many civic dates are free, including Diwali at Times Square, Edison, Nathan Phillips Square, Seattle Center Festál, and Frisco Diwali Mela (register for a QR code). Ticketed fireworks melas like Pleasanton still sell door tickets. Always recheck the organizer page.
- Should I go to a mela or a temple on Diwali night?
- If your household keeps Lakshmi Puja on November 8, treat public festivals as the weekends around it. Temple Annakut and ISKCON calendars often sit on or next to the holiday itself. Melas are for stages, food, and fireworks; mandirs are for the ritual clock.
- Where is the live list as dates change?
- Use Goldscene's Culture Calendar and filter by metro. This guide is a planning layer on top of those verified event pages.
